Jobbannons

We are seeking an experienced HVAC and Ventilation System Engineer to lead the design and development of safety-critical ventilation systems for nuclear facilities. You will work within one of our engineering teams in a multicultural and multidisciplinary stimulating environment, where you will be responsible for establishing the complete design framework—from deriving top-level requirements from international codes and standards through basic and detailed design phases.

This role requires deep expertise in translating regulatory guidelines (IAEA, SSM, and other nuclear codes) into actionable system requirements while applying rigorous systems engineering principles to ensure safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.

What we do at Blykalla

Blykalla is developing the next generation of nuclear technology with our Small Modular Reactor (SMR) based on innovative fuel, materials, and reactor designs. As Sweden’s only SMR developer, we are on a mission to decarbonize industries and enable safe, scalable, and sustainable energy solutions. Our technology uses uranium nitride fuel and lead coolant, creating novel challenges and opportunities for the fuel cycle and supporting systems.

What you’ll get to do

As an HVAC and Ventilation System Engineer, you will play a key role in leading the design and integration of nuclear ventilation and HVAC systems, ensuring safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance throughout all design phases. You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams and regulatory bodies to develop systems that meet the highest safety standards for nuclear facilities. Your key responsibilities would be:

Requirements Development & Regulatory Compliance

  • Derive and establish system requirements from international guidelines and nuclear standards (IAEA, SSM, ASME AG-1, etc.).
  • Interpret and translate regulatory requirements into functional, performance, and safety criteria.
  • Ensure compliance with nuclear safety classifications, QA standards, and maintain traceability throughout the design lifecycle.

System Design & Architecture

  • Lead conceptual, basic, and detailed design of nuclear ventilation and HVAC systems.
  • Develop system architectures, pressure cascade concepts, and zoning strategies for confinement.
  • Define filtration and ventilation configurations, including HEPA and carbon filtration systems for normal and emergency operations.

System Engineering & Integration

  • Perform system-level trade-off studies to balance safety, reliability, and cost.
  • Coordinate HVAC integration with other safety systems such as containment and fire protection and ventilation.
  • Apply MBSE methods and manage technical data, documentation, and configuration control.

Safety Analysis & Risk Management

  • Conduct FMEA and HAZOP analyses for ventilation and confinement systems.
  • Evaluate performance under normal, accident, and beyond-design-basis conditions.
  • Support Verification & Validation (V&V) activities and safety reviews in accordance with nuclear standards.

Technical Documentation & Project Management

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including system design descriptions, design basis documents, P&IDs, flow diagrams, single-line diagrams, and safety analysis reports.
  • Manage change requests, configuration control, and versioning across the project lifecycle.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations for regulatory bodies, safety committees, and stakeholders.
  • Communicate complex concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including reactor engineers, safety specialists, structural engineers, and regulatory affairs
  • Work closely with regulatory authorities during design reviews and licensing processes
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and design teams
  • Manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a highly regulated environment

Who you are

You will be part of a highly skilled team with a can-do attitude. We value personal chemistry and strive to create a workplace where you enjoy coming to. There are a few things that will help you succeed in this role:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, Energy, Process Engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in HVAC and ventilation system design for nuclear facilities or highly regulated industries
  • Proven track record of leading basic and detailed design of safety-critical ventilation systems
  • Expert knowledge of nuclear ventilation codes and standards including: IAEA Safety Standards, ASME AG-1, National regulatory requirements (e.g., SSM, NRC, ONR), ISO standards for nuclear ventilation
  • Deep understanding of nuclear safety classification, safety functions, and defense-in-depth principles
  • Expertise in confinement design, pressure cascade systems, and contamination control
  • Knowledge of HEPA filtration, activated carbon systems, and radiation protection principles
  • Knowledge and be capable of evaluating the results of HVAC modeling and simulation software.)
  • Knowledge of systems engineering processes and lifecycle management
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with meticulous attention to nuclear safety
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional, multicultural teams
  • Unwavering commitment to safety culture and regulatory compliance

Meritorious skills:

The following skills are not required but will be considered an advantage:

  • PhD in a relevant engineering discipline
  • INCOSE SEP (Systems Engineering Professional) certification
  • Experience with firefighting system design for nuclear or highly regulated industries
  • Knowledge of Swedish language
  • Experience with nuclear licensing processes and regulatory interactions
  • Field experience in construction, testing, commissioning or startup of HVAC and ventilation systems for nuclear plants.

Location
