Jobbannons

We are seeking a highly skilled Fluid Systems Engineer with deep expertise in thermodynamics, steam system design, and steam turbine applications for nuclear reactors. You will work within one of our Engineering Team in a multicultural and multidisciplinary stimulating environment, focusing on optimizing energy production, efficiency, and sustainability within nuclear power plants and research facilities.

This role requires a systems engineering mindset to analyze reactor energy output, improve plant efficiency, and ensure compliance with regulatory and environmental standards while working closely with mechanical, I&C and electrical engineers, and regulatory agencies to enhance the performance and reliability of nuclear energy systems.

What we do at Blykalla

Blykalla is developing the next generation of nuclear technology with our Small Modular Reactor (SMR) based on innovative fuel, materials, and reactor designs. As Sweden’s only SMR developer, we are on a mission to decarbonize industries and enable safe, scalable, and sustainable energy solutions. Our technology uses uranium nitride fuel and lead coolant, creating novel challenges and opportunities for the fuel cycle and supporting systems..

What you’ll get to do

As a Fluid System Engineer, you will play a key role in designing and optimizing the energy efficiency and performance of nuclear power systems, focusing on steam generation and turbine applications. You’ll collaborate closely with engineers across disciplines to develop innovative and reliable solutions that enhance reactor operation and sustainability. Your key responsibilities would be:

Systems Engineering & Integration

  • Define and manage system requirements, architectures, and interfaces for fluid and steam systems.
  • Integrate steam generation, distribution, and turbine systems within the broader plant architecture.
  • Apply Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methods and manage technical data, documentation, and configuration control.

Fluid & Steam System Design and Optimization

  • Design, analyze, and optimize nuclear fluid systems with emphasis on steam systems and turbine applications.
  • Work with reactor engineers to enhance heat transfer, coolant flow, and turbine efficiency.
  • Develop strategies to improve energy utilization and plant performance, and conduct system-level trade-off studies to optimize reliability and cost.
  • Build or use 0D/1D models to represent system behavior and performance.

Documentation & Collaboration

  • Develop and maintain technical documentation including process flow diagrams, P&IDs, and system specifications.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for regulatory bodies and internal/external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to enhance plant operation and reliability.
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Performance Monitoring & Analysis

  • Monitor plant performance metrics and conduct energy audits to identify improvement areas.
  • Perform thermal-hydraulic modeling, flow analysis, and energy modeling using tools such as MA Thermoflow.
  • Conduct risk assessments and cost-benefit analyses for energy efficiency initiatives.

Safety, Verification & Risk Management

  • Perform FMEA and risk analyses for fluid and steam systems.
  • Support Verification & Validation (V&V) activities and ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

Innovation & Development

  • Assist in nuclear plant upgrades, retrofits, and modifications to enhance energy efficiency and steam system performance
  • Evaluate alternative energy integration with nuclear power, such as district heating, hydrogen production, and grid resilience (if needed)

Who you are

You will be part of a highly skilled team with a can-do attitude. We value personal chemistry and strive to create a workplace where you enjoy coming to. There are a few things that will help you succeed in this role:

  • Master's degree in Energy Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in fluid systems engineering, steam system design, or nuclear engineering with focus on steam turbines and thermal systems
  • Knowledge of systems engineering process development and lifecycle management
  • Deep expertise in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and energy conversion in nuclear systems
  • Strong experience in steam system design and steam turbine applications
  • Knowledge of turbine systems, steam cycles, heat exchangers, and power grid integration
  • Proficiency in energy modeling and hydraulic simulation software (e.g. MATLAB, Thermoflow, Aspen Plus, Flowmaster, APROS, AFT)
  • Familiarity with regulations, and ASME codes for nuclear fluid systems
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with meticulous attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams
  • Unwavering commitment to safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance

Meritorious skills

The following skills are not required but will be considered an advantage:

  • PhD in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline
  • INCOSE SEP (Systems Engineering Professional) certification
  • Field experience in testing, commissioning or startup of industrial plants.
  • Familiarity with ASME, RCC-M, regulatory body requirements, and ANSI standards for nuclear fluid systems
  • Ability to build relationships and influence at all levels of the organization
  • Written and oral fluency in Swedish

Location

This position is for our office in Stockholm.

So, what do you think?

Joining our team means being part of a supportive and innovative environment where your ideas are valued and your expertise is recognized. You will have the opportunity to work with industry leaders and contribute to the safe and sustainable use of nuclear power.

Note: We encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds and are an equal-opportunity employer.
